Spring '12 Beauty: Best Serums

These days you can't flip through a fashion magazine or peruse the beauty counters of your favorite department stores without being bombarded by beauty serums promising to even out your skin tone, boost hydration, improve elasticity, and even treat fine lines and wrinkles. Serums are the new beauty basic and there seems to be one for every skincare woe you can possibly imagine.

When it comes to the “order of operations” beauty serums are now the second step in your skincare routine. After washing your face you apply the serum to clean skin and then follow with your usual moisturizer for day or night cream at night.
The serum works to target specific skincare problems and treat them on the surface layer of the skin. Serums are finer in texture than traditional skincare creams so they’re easier for the skin to absorb. Here’s a look at some of the top serums on the market and how they can help your skin.

Kiehls Clearly Corrective serum is a brightening serum designed to target dark spots, discolorations, acne scarring and uneven skin tone. The formula’s key ingredient is Activated C, the latest-generation Vitamin C derivative available. (Kiehl’s was the first company to bring this ingredient to beauty market in the U.S.) The serum works to break apart discolorations and prevents the formation of new pigment clusters giving users clear, spot free skin. In Clinical trials 69% of women who used saw a reduction in dark spot intensity and 74% showed a significant reduction in acne scarring. This product really works. I used it on a few dark spots I had left over from old acne scars and within a few weeks of regular use they significantly faded and many disappeared completely. This product is specifically designed for anyone who has lingering dark spots from acne or sun damage.

The beauty experts at Calidora Skin Clinic recently launched their own line of beauty products including a newly formulated Regenerative Vitamin B Serum. The serum works to elevate hydration levels and stimulate cell turnover. Active ingredients include Phyto Hyaluronic Acid, ProVitamin B5, and Grape Skin Extract. I have combination skin so I prefer to use hydrating serums only at night and this product worked like a charm to keep my skin from drying out during the cold, winter months. This product would be great for women (or men) who want a major boost in hydration for their skin. This serum also layers perfectly under your makeup to smooth out skin before applying foundation.

Last year Clinique launched their “Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector” serum designed to reduces dark spots, age spots, and traces of acne with regular use. In their clinical trials most users saw a visible reduction in dark spots at the 12-week mark. This product won the Allure Beauty of Beauty Award in 2011 but interestingly enough it has very mixed reviews on Sephora.com.

The name of this product speaks for itself. “When Hope is not Enough” by Philosophy is an oil-free antioxidant serum that is designed to tone and firm skin while helping to minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles. This serum helps protect skin from free radical and environmental damage to help prevent premature aging. Another bonus? The formula includes Chaparral extract which works to help minimize unwanted facial hair. This product is great for women looking to be proactive about the care of their skin or for women wanting to gently treat fine lines.

As a Sephora beauty insider I was originally introduced to this product via a sample I received while visiting the store one day and then got hooked after immediately noticing the new-found radiance in my skin. DDF’s Mesojection™ Antioxidant Moisturizing Serum
works to rejuvenate skin by targeting problem areas with potent “micro-injections” of active ingredients including vitamins, antioxidants and amino acids. The price is a little steep ($80 for .9 oz.) but this serum really packs a punch!

One of my close girlfriends is a former Boots beauty advisor and even though she no longer works for the company she still swears by their skincare line. The Boot's Protect & Perfect serum is one of the products that I fell in love with too and whenever she would drop off samples I would hoard them in my beauty cabinet. This serum is designed for deep hydration and works to improve skin tone and lessen the appearance of wrinkles. This is great for night time use if you have oily or combination skin.

Belltown Gem: Karan Dannenberg Clothier

If it's been awhile since last visited Karan Dannenberg's Belltown boutique, it's worth a second look. For over 13 years she's been giving clients exceptional customer service and for Karan and her staff it's all about creating a one-of-a-kind shopping experience for guests. "I'm not into selling someone a sweater," says Karan, "I'm in to creating a total look for my clients from head-to-toe." She's so dedicated to providing customers with a complete wardrobe that she frequently makes special orders to ensure that the pieces are exactly the right color and size. Each season she also works with local jewelry designers like Martha Driver of Rock Star Jewelry to create custom pieces that fit in perfectly with the assortment.

The Forecast Fashion Show: Recap

Seattle Magazine's 'The Forecast' fashion show held last night at Benaroya Hall featured many of the looks that you would expect out of the Pacific Northwest scene including a plethora of rain boots, parka jackets and infinity scarves, but also featured some unexpected highlights including colorful evening wear by Luly Yang, tailored trench coats with dressmaker details by Lila Getty, a leather mini dress from Snowboard Connection and a sequin embellished chocolate brown Herve Leger dress from David Lawrence.

Seattle mag fashion editor Kate Calamusa spoke about 'The Forecast' theme and reiterated that if you live in the Northwest you have to find a chic way to dress for the elements. For many of us that means embracing layers, finding stylish ways to stay dry in the rain and finding a way to pair a beautiful evening gown with a luxurious coat. The show's main focus was on promoting Seattle-based retailers and designers who work hard to help translate global trends and inspire their clients by infusing a signature Seattle spin on the season's hottest looks. Featured designers and boutiques included Horseshoe, Butch Blum, Snowboard Connection, Baby & Co., David Lawrence, Built for Man, Heilyke and Luly Yang Couture. Terri Morgan of TCM Models directed the fashion show and Swink Style Bar provided hair and make-up for the models. Many of the models sported the fishtail braid, one of the biggest hair trends for spring.

Fashion blogger Alix Rose was in attendance at the show and was tweeting LIVE from the event. (Of course!) Check out her site and follow her on Twitter @AlixRose.

My date for the evening was Lauren Hale of Bonza Bash. You can't see them in this picture but at the event she was wearing a pair of black sequin leggings which paired perfectly with her rock-and-roll Vince Camuto handbag.

Over 50+ looks went down the runway at 'The Forecast' and it was nice to see many familiar faces from TCM Models on the catwalk including Liz, Heather, Marshay and Yuris. It was also refreshing to see the collaboration of so many great retailers and talented designers working together to put the spotlight on Seattle fashion. The show served as a visual reminder to shop local and support the fashion scene in the city!

P.s. - Pics from the event will be posted by the end of the week on Team Photogenic's website.

The Mane Attraction

I'm all about great hair. It's sort of my signature when it comes to style. I've been obsessed with my hair for as long as I can remember and not because I have great hair but because I have long, coarse hair that is hard to tame and even more difficult to style without the right products. Here are a few of my favorite beauty tips and salon products that help me "manage my mane".

The only flat iron that has ever worked to straighten and smooth my hair is the Babyliss Pro. I literally cried when my husband gave it to me for Christmas a few years ago and I've been obsessed with it ever since. It has 2.5 inch ceramic plates which are perfect for long hair and heats up to 450°. No more waiting (and waiting) for your flat iron to get "hot enough" to work.

The Straight & Smooth Spray for Thick / Coarse hair by ghd works to help tame thick, rebellious hair while also protecting from heat and styling damage. All you need to do is apply 4-6 sprays to damp hair before blow-drying and style as usual. You can also use this product on dry hair to refresh your style by spritzing over dry hair and then either using a blow dryer or styling tool to finish off your look.

Washing my hair is somewhat of a "major event" in my life because it literally takes FOR-EVER. My girlfriends tease me because I regularly read fashion mags while blow drying my own hair so it goes without saying that it eventually becomes worth it to spend some cash on a quality blow dryer. The T3 Veloce Dryer - Silver is a tourmaline-infused hair dryer which means that when heated it emits the maximum level of negative ions and infrared heat to heat the hair from the inside out and accelerate water evaporation. Read: It uses technology to make blow drying your hair extra fast! Almost 40% faster than traditional blow dryers. Yay!

In between washes I swear by Sidlab "Magic" Dry Shampoo. Based out of Portland, Oregon this line is sulfate and paraben-free and the products are amazing! The Magic Dry shampoo is clear (which I love!) and it instantly absorbs oil and adds volume to your hair without leaving product build-up behind. This is one product I would order by the case if I had room to store it!

Celebrity stylist Rosaline Hampton turned me on to the Davines line of shampoos and conditioners. The Melu line is specifically designed for long hair and helps to prevent breakage. The name Melu comes from the English term “mellow”, meaning rich, full-bodied, abundant, and soft. The Melu shampoo and conditioner contain Mediterranean active ingredients including spinach extract, apricot butter, cherry oil and rosemary extract.

And when I'm traveling or there's no time to do my own hair I love visiting a great blow dry bar. In London my favorite is the Hersheson's Blow Dry bar inside the Oxford Circus Top Shop. You can choose from a menu of fashion-forward looks and relax while reading a magazine and letting the stylists work their magic. No matter what style you pick or what type of hair you have all blow outs are priced at £24. And once you're finished getting glam you can stick around and shop for a new outfit. How perfect is that?

Beach Bag Beauty Essentials

It's that time of year again: Spring Break! The ultimate excuse to take a much needed vacation and escape to somewhere tropical to soak up the sun. Don't hit the beach unprepared this season. Here are 5 beauty products to pack in your spring break beach bag!

# 1 Sunscreen
It goes without saying that if you're planning to spend time in the sun you need to protect your delicate skin. Peter Thomas Roth's Clini-Matte All Day Oil-Control SPF 20 is a sheer sunscreen that helps keep skin in check while providing UVA/UVB protection. The formula is oil and fragrance free and absorbs instantly.

#2 Super Easy Make-up
When you're on vacation you want to spend your time on the beach and not in your hotel room getting ready. Bring along an easy make-up kit that contains all the essentials like the Nars 'Sea of Love' set (pictured above). This set contains all the Nars cult favorites including The Nars Multiple stick (which can be used on lips and cheeks), a mini blush in 'Super Orgasm', a mini lipgloss, and a full size Illuminator in Laguna which has a beautiful golden shimmer.

# 3 A Mist to Avoid Meltdowns
And speaking of make-up, what good is spending time primping if your make-up won't stay put? To avoid make-up melt downs try Make Up For Ever's Mist & Fix travel sized spray that works to set all types of makeup and prolongs hold, even under extreme conditions. Enriched with chitosan, a marine algae extract, this makeup fixer spray protects skin against external damage caused by temperature changes, pollution, and other possible irritants.

# 4 A Sweet Scent
For a fun, flirty fragrance this spring try Ocean Lounge by Escada. With notes of plum, pear nectar and petal sorbet this fragrance is the perfect way to top off a sweet spring dress.

#5 Airbrush Bronzer

Last but not least, one of the products I never go on vacation without is Sally Hansen's Airbrush legs. Available in 4 shades this water-resistant, lightweight leg makeup is perfect for hiding imperfections on your legs! There's a good reason why celebs and top make-up artists swear by this product: it's amazing, affordable and it works.
