Queen Anne Holiday Shopping Guide: Charley + May

You don't have to wait until Small Business Saturday to shop at your favorite local boutiques. Charley + May on Queen Anne is gearing up for the holidays and has a great selection of gift-worthy items that everyone on your list will love. Here are a few of my favorites.

Stylish Bags by Keeper
If you're looking for something made in Seattle by hand, don't miss the gorgeous laser cut felt Peacock handbags by Keeper (pictured left). Each bag comes with a detachable leather strap that features a Peacock cutout detail and chain embellishment.  The company also makes a stylish envelope clutch (pictured right) composed of wool and recycled PET hand-laced with vegan tanned leather. If you stop by the store and love the idea of handcrafted felt accessories you might also want to check out the felt coasters by Keeper. They make a beautiful (and budget-friendly) hostess gift for the holidays.

Seattle-inspired soap by Blackbird
Another local favorite you'll find in stock at Charley + May is an assortment of Blackbird grooming products. In addition to their signature Beard Oil which is perfect for No Shave November, you'll find sweet smelling incense pyres and my personal favorite, the Blackbird May 18th black soap, inspired by eruption of Mount St. Helens. This soap set makes a great stocking stuffer for the guys on your list.

Eco-friendly water bottles by bkr in a rainbow of colors
I recently purchased my first bkr water bottle from Charley + May and now I'm hooked! Not only do I find myself drinking more water throughout the day, but I love the fact that I'm drinking out of glass not plastic. bkr bottles are not only better for my body- they're essential for the environment and they make a very stylish gift! #Cheers

Statement rings by Snash
Handmade in Brooklyn, Snash jewelry makes it easy to make a statement. The rings are unisex and easily adjustable. Charley + May owner Lauren Formicola even convinced the designer to make a Seattle skyline ring, making it even easier to show your city a little love.

A Sleek Portable Radio
Perfect for gadget geeks and music lovers alike, the Tivoli portable radio is the perfect way to take music anywhere without sacrificing space. Great for the office, outdoors, travel and home, these sleek radios make a great practical gift!

Socks by Stance
If you're late to the Stance socks bandwagon, jump right on. These socks are crazy comfortable and super cool making them a perfect gift for those "hard to shop for" people on your list. Stance socks are available for men, women and kids in crazy prints and patterns that will suit any personality and style preference. You'll like these socks so much that you'll probably want to pick up a pair (or two) for yourself.

The Hug Mug
You can't help but smile when you see the porcelain Hug Mug by Alessi. Hand-decorated and perfect for minimalists, the Hug Mug is great for coffee and tea lovers who take their morning ritual seriously (but not too seriously.)

Book Review: Parisienne French

My first two trips to Paris would have been a lot different had I taken the time to learn a few key phrases in French. I was busy, London was the focus of my trip, and despite the Spanish courses I took in high school my foreign language skills were limited if not severely lacking. One of my most memorable exchanges was in a Parisian coffee shop where I struggled to order a simple Americano. Turns out, in Paris "Cafe Americain" is filtered coffee. "Cafe Leger" on the other hand is espresso with double the water. As I struggled to figure this out (in English) and the barista struggled to help me (in French) the rest of the customers in line behind me began to get impatient. Feeling annoyed and sensing that I had no intention of trying to figure out my order in French the barista finally turns to me and says in perfect English, "Just tell me what you want to drink." Note to self: learn a few key phrases if you don't want everyone in the local coffee shops to hate you. Noted.

Turns out, Paris may be in my cards again very soon, except this time I plan on taking this trusty new sidekick (pictured left) also known as "Parisienne French: Chic Phrases, Slang & Style" by Rhianna Jones. This book was easy to digest and fun to read. Highlights include a user-friendly pronunciation key, common phrases for any stylish situation, a guide to the 20 arrondissements (neighborhoods) and a quick overview of Parisian culture. A must-read for anyone who doesn't speak French and plans on visiting the famous "City of Light".
This book is the perfect budget-friendly gift for your stylish friends who love to travel, because when all else fails, at least you'll always have Paris.

Introducing e-commerce boutique JJ Caprices

What do you get when you mix an avid traveler with an eye for style?

After visiting more than 33 countries and falling in love with the people and places along the way, Jennifer Jedda decided it was time to combine her wanderlust with her desire to showcase extraordinary creations from artisans around the world. Just a mere two months old, JJ Caprices features hand-selected jewelry, scarves, fragrances, and home accents from countries like India, Israel, France and Spain. Every single item featured on the site was discovered in it's country of origin during Jennifer's travels. Along with the item descriptions you'll also find information about where Jennifer discovered each piece and why she was drawn to it. Take for example, the soft pink enamel cuff (pictured below, left) made by Israeli jewelry designer Leetal Kalmanson. This gorgeous, handmade piece was discovered by Jennifer while strolling the streets of Jerusalem. In love with Paris? You'll want to check out the delicate votive candles (pictured below, right) wrapped in vintage Parisian lace by designer Jeanne Notari. "I showcase women's accessories and smaller home accents that have surprised and delighted me," says owner Jennifer Jedda, "My purpose is not only to sell beautiful things, but to engage my women clientele by sharing stories of the places the pieces come from as well as the artists that give each item a heartbeat."

Just in time for the holiday shopping season, JJ Caprices offers women the chance to roam the world and discover gorgeous little gems while supporting artists around the globe. A portion of every JJ Caprices purchase goes to World Vision to sponsor girls in developing countries. The contribution is used to provide education, water and health to girls and their families so that they can sustain a better quality of life. Shop now and enjoy free shipping on all standard orders over $50. You'll also want to sign up for the JJ Caprices newsletter to save 15% on your first order.

Shop Local: Check out JJ Caprices in person and meet Jennifer Jedda at the Bellevue Athletic Club trunk show on Nov. 9th.

Can't get enough? You can also follow Jennifer's global travel adventures on her personal travel blog. And since she's traveled to more than 30+ countries, we couldn't resist asking Jennifer for her top 5 travel tips.

Tip # 1- Make bookings a breeze with sites like Skyscanner.com. It's easy to check multiple sites for the best prices on airfare and hotel and find the ones that offer "free cancellation" in case your travel plans change.

Tip # 2- When traveling on a budget take trains or public transportation from the airport into the city so that you can splurge on other aspects of your trip like champagne and good food. By taking the RER into Paris you can save 50-70 EUR which is around the price of lunch at the famed Tour d'Argent.

Tip #3- Research your destination to maximize your trip. "There are so many resources online where you can easily find details on tours, places and packages that speak to things that might interest you," says Jennifer. Don't miss out on the hidden gems the city has to offer.

Tip #4- Despite all that research, make sure you always leave room in your itinerary to just "get lost". Wander the streets, duck into cafes, meet locals, sit and soak in the surroundings, eat at a restaurant off the beaten path...."These deviations have proven to be some of the most enriching experiences of my trips," adds Jennifer.

Tip #5- My travel essentials include my Tumi crossbody bag (stylish yet sensible for keeping valuables safe) and my travel "all-in-one" adapter which works in multiple countries to make getting "plugged in" a cinch.

Check out highlights from one of Jennifer's favorite travel experiences in Mali via her travel blog, One Girl's Travel Adventures:

Rosaline Hampton hosts Fashion Camp for Grown-Ups

Just a mere two months since giving birth to her son Henry, celebrity stylist Rosaline Hampton is already back in action. Never mind the normal adjustment period that many moms require in order to get back into the swing of things, Rosaline is cool, calm and collected when I catch up with her in her namesake Bellevue salon. "The first 5 weeks were a blur," admits Rosaline, who says that once she mastered the daily routine of getting both herself and her baby out the door on time, everything else seemed like a breeze. She credits her organizational skills and extreme planning for keeping things running smoothly and is currently working on striking a balance between fashion and family.

Next up on the agenda for Rosaline Hampton? Fashion Camp for Grown-Ups inspired by the summer camp experience she created for teens. "We had so many people asking us when fashion camp for grown-ups was coming," says Rosaline, who eventually gave in to the demand. Flipping through fashion magazines for inspiration is one thing, but getting to spend time quality time with experts who can intimately discuss hair, make-up and wardrobe trends and how to make them work for you was an experience that even grown-ups responded to with excitement. In fact, the demand was so great that the workshop quickly sold-out. For grown-ups, the signature 4-day fashion camp experience was consolidated into one full day of workshops. The range of topics to be covered during Fashion Camp will make-up tutorials, how to dress for your body type, how to incorporate fall trends into your wardrobe, how to shop for denim, how to pose on the red carpet, how to embrace the power of color and more. Each guest will also receive a personal headshot by Fashion Camp photographer Meg Stacker. Special guests include YouTube sensation and beauty blogger Marlena Stell of Makeup Geek, Fitness Champion and Posing coach Tanji Johnson, designer Farinaz Taghavi who will be showcasing her fall/winter collection and more. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Rosaline Hampton Fashion Camp for teens. Fashion Camp for Grown-ups is taking place on Saturday, October 26th from 10am-4pm at Rosaline Hampton Salon in Bellevue. For more information call (425) 614-6377.
