Holiday Gift Guide: The Outdoor Enthusiast

If you're on the hunt for a great gift for the outdoor enthusiast in your life, you've come to the right place. We're lucky to live somewhere that we can enjoy the convenience of city life and still escape to the mountains for a day of adventure. Here's a round-up of the best gifts for the people on your list who can't get enough of the great outdoors.

For skiing and snowboarding the Captura goggles from K2 offer world class optics in a sophisticated shape. Available in a blue/pink mirrored colorway these gorgeous goggles are a must-have snow accessory that also make a great gift!

For a refreshing dose of color this season the REI co-op down jacket is a great pick. Featuring light weight insulation this jacket has a durable water repellent finish and also provides wind resistance for outdoor adventures. Available in multiple colors.

Personal style doesn't stop when you hit the slopes, proving that there's always a way to wear leopard, especially in the Northwest. Stylish outdoor enthusiasts will love these 686 Authentic Willow soft shell pants available locally at Evo in Fremont. Complete the look with a solid colored snow jacket and a soft beanie.

In the next few weeks many stylish Seattleites will be setting fitness-related New Years Resolutions and the JoeyBra Sport is here to help! Designed with discreet side pockets the JoeyBra conveniently stores ID cards, cash, post-workout snacks and even keys so that women have a safe place to store valuables. Brilliant!

For a fun and budget-friendly stocking stuffer check out Stance socks. In addition to being colorful, warm and available in lots of great patterns, they also have cushioned support making them extremely comfortable. The El Paso pair (shown above) is available locally at Zumiez.

For outdoor enthusiasts on-the-go this Eddie Bauer Down Travel Throw is the perfect solution for sunny but chilly winter days. It's warm, folds up small and even doubles as a travel pillow! And don't worry, if pink isn't your color, there are plenty of other shades to choose from.

I like infinity scarves for many reasons, but mostly because they are really hard to mess up from a styling perspective, which is also why they make an excellent gift. The Matchstick scarf (pictured above) is available locally at Moorea Seal and instantly adds color to any outfit.

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the durability of the rain-resistant duffle bag from Filson. Made right here in the USA, the medium duffle combines bridle leather with rugged twill and has rust-proof brass zippers and storm flap closures for added protection from the elements.

Top it all off with "The Kate" beanie by Coal Headwear. This fun waffle knit beanie with an oversized pom is great for those on your list who are extremely hard to shop for. This beanie is designed locally and also makes a great stocking stuffer!

Last but not least, for the girl who's got it all, KAVU mittens with a ski-style snowflake print make a great gift. Perfect for keeping hands toasty warm on a brisk winter day! These adorable gloves remind me of childhood and are guaranteed to add an element of excitement to any snow day.

Thanks for stopping by to check out this holiday gift guide. Have a great holiday season and thanks for shopping local!

Holiday Gift Guide: Style Urban Essentials

The holidays are upon us which means that it's time to find the perfect gift for everyone on your list. We're lucky to live in a city that's rich with so many amazing designers, neighborhood boutiques and international brands that help make shopping local a cinch this season. Here's a round-up of our favorite urban style essentials.

Just as Anna Wintour advises the audience in the movie The September Issue "There's always a way to wear fur", in the Northwest there's always a way to wear cashmere. Made from 100% Mongolian Cashmere this asymmetrical poncho by Issaquah designer Paychi Guh is perfect for crisp Seattle days.

Speaking of cashmere, for a serious splurge you can't go wrong with this gorgeous oblong cashmere coat by Schai. Made in the USA this collarless coat made of 100% cashmere from Italy is fully lined and perfect for fall.

These ombre-inspired glasses from SEE Eyewear are my favorite way to instantly add color to any outfit. Available with clear lenses or a prescription, these glasses are fun to wear and will instantly perk up you entire face. Which really means you can wear them, put your hair in a pony tail and even get away with wearing less make-up. Who knew a pair of glasses could streamline your get ready routine too? Pictured: SEE Eyewear Style #9254.

For under $30 this sleek faux cheetah and white lambskin slim wallet by Jonquil & Mr Black makes a great stocking stuffer. Handmade in Ballard these wallets are perfect for urban living.

Holiday hopping can be an adventure and if you love discovering something new you'll want to check out the 8telier pop-up shop going on now at Pacific Place. You'll find a host of urban essentials at the shop including leather jackets, knit tops, cozy cardigans and even small home goods like bar soap from local line Blackbird.

For a great gift on a budget I recommend these booties by Seattle-based Dolce Vita shoes. Priced at $100 flat these suede ankle boots are versatile and have a heel height that is completely manageable, even in the rain.

And underneath it all every stylish Seattleite needs gorgeous lingerie. Visit Bellefleur Lingerie in Fremont for a beautiful selection of sophisticated and chic lingerie. My personal pick is the Pansy collection by Freya. (Pictured: Freya Pansy Midnight Bra and matching brief)

Stylish Seattle Getaway: Suncadia

Style, serenity and sunshine come together beautifully at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum. Just a mere 80 miles east of Seattle the gorgeous views will take your breath away. If you've ever felt too plugged in when you'd rather rather zen out, you're in luck. Suncadia Resort is well worth the drive and you'll feel instantly relaxed the moment you hit the lodge. This is an easy getaway that will leave you recharged and ready to take on the week ahead.

The What: Weekend escape to Suncadia Resort

The When:
Suncadia can be enjoyed year-round. During the summer months guests will enjoy swimming, outdoor concerts in the amphitheater, s'mores, evening strolls under the stars, and outdoor dining. The winter months are perfect for enjoying a glass of wine near the fireplace, ice skating, snowshoe trekking, and even sleigh rides with the kids.

The Why:
Because according to CNN Money, taking a break from work is when people come up with their best ideas. Translation: you'll basically be multi-tasking.

The How:
My vehicle of choice for road trips to Suncadia is the Lexus RX450 Hybrid. You get all the luxury you would expect from a Lexus with the added environmental benefit of reduced emissions. It gets 32 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway making it fuel-efficient and fun to drive. The dual-screen rear entertainment center is pretty awesome too! My son loved watching Star Wars from the backseat.

The Details:
Our weekend at Suncadia was incredibly relaxing from start to finish. Upon arrival we had lunch at Portals restaurant located in The Lodge and since it was sunny outside we ate on the terrace and enjoyed sweeping views of the Cle Elum River and the Cascade Mountains. This was such an easy getaway from the city that felt so close, and yet so far away. The guest rooms are clean and comfortable with all the amenities you would expect. What I love most about Suncadia is that you can essentially choose your own adventure. One day might include breakfast in bed followed by a stroll around the property and an afternoon swim in the pool, while the next day might begin with a sunrise hike followed by a day at the spa lounging in the mineral pools after a hot stone massage.

What to Pack:
The sunny days get hotter in Cle Elum that in Seattle, so if you head over in the summer months you'll want to pack shorts, tanks, dresses and a swimsuit. If you head over in the winter be sure to pack a coat that is water-resistant and warm for your outdoor adventures. In the evenings I found myself wanting to curl up next to the fireplace in soft, comfortable pajamas, so be sure to pack those too!

What to know before you go:

  • Request the river view when you book your stay. The views are incredible and they get even better at night when the stars come out!
  • In the evenings the resort usually has entertainment in the lodge near the fireplace. Grab a glass of wine from the bar, sit back and enjoy.
  • There are two swimming pools on-site. One that is located just steps from the lodge  that is mellow and great for adults and a second pool that is kid-friendly just a 5 minute walk away.
  • If you can't imagine a weekend without Starbucks, never fear. There's a coffee bar located near the lobby that makes a decent cup of joe and they also stock snacks, sandwiches and lunch items that are perfect for picnics.

This weekend: The NFL Fan Style Tour Truck hits Issaquah

Football is a family affair at our house and thankfully I don't have to sacrifice style in order to support the Seahawks. In fact, there are so many flattering fan gear options available this year that I'll have to start rotating my gameday outfits. Seahawks fans won't want to miss the NFL Fan Style Tour Truck this Saturday, September 13th in Issaquah. The 53' foot trailer will offer plenty of shopping opportunities for fans and feature an NFL Virtual Dressing Room, Rush Zone merchandise, an NFL Auction Area with signed jerseys, and much more.

So what's the best way to show off your style with your gameday look?
NFL Creative Director of Women's Apparel Phillip Bloch gives us a few fashion tips.

If you're going for an athletic + chic look, Phillip recommends side-striped workout pants paired with an NFL tank, complemented by stilettos and a bold jacket. Pictured above: Seahawks tri-blend vintage tank (available at NFLshop.com), Gorjana bracelet (available at ShopBop.com), suede trimmed wool track pants by Joseph (available at Net-a-Porter.com), Trouve reversible biker jacket (available at Nordstrom), Asos leather wallet, Steve Madden Insaniti Pumps.
Another fun way to style your fan gear this season is to pair a 60's inspired silhouettes with NFL clothing and sports gear to give it a modern twist. For example, a varsity-inspired cardigan worn with a 60's style vintage dress. Pictured above: Dallas Cowboys Pro Line cardigan (available at NFLshop.com), Topshop floral weave dress, DVF Ziggy Oxfords (available at Nordstrom).

And for the workaholic: Throw on a classic blazer and pair with an NFL t-shirt and your favorite pair of jeans. Pictured above: Maison Martin Margiela blazer (available at Net-a-Porter.com), Seahawks tee (available at NFLshop.com), Rag & Bone Denim, Kate Spade wristlet (available at Zappos.com).

Have with your gameday gear this season and don't miss out on the NFL Fan Style tour stop this weekend in Issaquah!

What: NFL Fan Style Tour Truck

When: Saturday, September 13th, 2014

Why: Because you need new fan gear for gameday #GoHawks

3 Natural Skincare products I can't live without

Getting into a natural skincare routine is something that definitely didn't feel "natural" for me. For years I used products that were full of chemicals and the truth is, I didn't even think twice about it. I wrongly assumed that products with "active ingredients" and additives would be more effective to treat various skin conditions but I'm happy to report that I was wrong. YouTube vlogger Kendra Atkins of Vlog with Kendra recently put a new app on my radar called Think Dirty that lets you scan your beauty products and learn how toxic the ingredients are. It even suggests cleaner alternatives that are better for your skin. I had a great time scanning my beauty arsenal and I'm pleased to report that my skincare routine is "clean". Here are a few of my favorite natural products that I wish I would have started using sooner.

African Black Soap
I stumbled upon African Black Soap by Alaffia on Amazon.com (it was one of the products "suggested" to me on the site) and found out that the company is based out of Olympia, so I decided to give the cleanser a try. There are numerous benefits to using African Black soap and aside from the fact that it's great for combination skin, I love the fact that you can use it as a face wash, shampoo and even a shaving cream. It also works for clearing up dry skin and acne. You can get African Black Soap by Alaffia locally at Super Supplements, Whole Foods and of course, Amazon.com.

Rose Water Toner
Traditional toners usually contain alcohol which can be very drying for the skin and for those of us who depend on these products to get rid of oil, doing without them can be a deal-breaker. Say hello to Thayers Rose Petal Witch Hazel toner that smells sweet and has soothing aloe to tone skin without stripping it. I use this product as part of my regular skincare routine and love the fact that it doesn't contain alcohol. You can buy this product locally at Bartell Drugs and Super Supplements.

Apple Cider Vinegar
Ok, first things first. The smell of apple cider vinegar isn't the best, but the results are amazing, so bear with me. I started using Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar when I was pregnant because I didn't want to use chemicals to spot treat acne but I desperately wanted clear skin. This stuff really works! You can dilute it and use it as a toner or use it full-strength on spots as an overnight treatment. I apply it when needed after washing my face and wake up with clear skin. It's my little secret weapon. You can buy Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar locally at most grocery stores including QFC and Safeway.

So stop slathering your skin with chemicals and give these natural skincare products a try. You'll save money and love the results.

In case you missed it: 5 takeaways from Pine & 14th Family Day

If you didn't make it out to the Pine & 14th Family Day today on Capitol Hill please know you were missed. But don't worry. We ate extra astrologically themed cookies from Dianne's Delights on your behalf and penned a short recap of 5 things you need to know about the party.

#1- Photo fans (myself included) got a chance to nerd-out on Polaroid cameras and film in the Impossible Project's Silver Shade Airstream parked outside Rare Medium as part of their nationwide tour. In 2008 The Impossible Project saved the last Polaroid production plan in the Netherlands and started to invent and produce new instant film for old Polaroid cameras. They even make hardware including the Impossible Instant Lab while lets you transform digital images on your iPhone into Polaroids. Insider tip: Get your own Impossible Instant Lab at Rare Medium on Capitol Hill.

#2- Bootyland Kids is a great place to shop for toys and clothing for kids. Since 1995 this Capitol Hill boutique has been the go-to place for eco-conscious moms who are looking for organic apparel for babies and kids (up to youth size 12), toys, all-natural beauty products and even amber teething necklaces. Insider shopping tip: This is a great place to shop locally for Seattle-based Kate Quinn Organics.

#3- Representing one half of The AstroTwins, local author and celebrity astrologer Tali Edut lives here in Seattle on Capitol Hill. The Pine & 14th Family Day event marked the local launch of Momstrology, the fourth book she's written with her twin sister Ophira. This is an incredibly insightful and easy to read parenting guide that can be used to decode kid behavior based on birth date. Insider tip: There's a reason this book is a best seller on Amazon. Not only does it make a great gift for moms (hello summer baby showers!), it's a priceless guide for anyone who is interested in understanding more about their own astrological sign.  This book is also available locally at the Pacific Place Barnes & Noble.

#4- Well the good news is, should you ever find yourself in an emergency situation on Capitol Hill you are in good hands. The friendly team at Seattle Fire Station #25 on Pine street had a great time showing kids around the station and letting them take pictures on the trucks. Look closely in this pic and you can see the disco ball that hangs from the ceiling above one of the trucks. The disco ball was apparently rescued from a night club that was being shut down on the hill. #onlyoncapitolhill

#5- Last but not least, the Pine & 14th Family Day event would not have been possible without help from our sponsors including Seattle Metropolitan magazine, Dianne's Delights, Nuflours, and Talking Rain. We also want to give a big thank you to everyone who helped us spread the word about this community event including The Capitol Hill Blog, SkinnyPurse, Fresh Jess, Style Logical, An Emerald City Life and BellingFAM.
