Recap: Portland's 2nd Annual Sustainable Fashion Forum

The 2nd Annual Sustainable Fashion Forum, produced by Brittany Sierra of Laptops and Smalltalk, took place on Saturday, April 21st in Portland. The forum explored the social and environmental impacts that fashion has on our world and challenged guests to consciously examine their current consumption habits when it comes to beauty, fashion, and even food.

The half-day event at Yale Union featured thoughtful panel discussions, an eco-friendly marketplace filled with local and sustainable vendors, and a fashion show. Speakers included Davora Linder of Seattle's Prairie Underground, Kelly Raynor of Modified Style, Whitney Bauck of Fashionista.com, Andrea Plell of Fashion Revolution, and Carly Mick of KEEN footwear.

Guests of the event learned timely information about the challenges facing the fashion industry when it comes to sustainability. Speakers also offered fashion fans tips on how on how to make a change as a consumer by being thoughtful about purchasing habits, choosing environmentally-friendly fabrics, shopping locally, and demanding more transparency within the supply chain when shopping from global brands.

The Sustainable Fashion Forum provided thought-provoking information about eco-friendly fashion and presented it in a way that was fun and digestible. I look forward to diving further into this topic in the months to come. We need to extend our conversation about eco-friendly fashion beyond Earth day/month and educate ourselves as consumers about the environmental impacts the fashion industry has on our planet.

Spotted around Town: Andieanderin Neck Ties

Seattle stylist Darcy Camden recently named neckties as one of her favorite spring fashion accessories, so it's no surprise that we've seen this trend pop up all over town adding a splash of color to outfits and starting meaningful discussions along the way. Andieanderin ties have been featured on King 5's Evening magazine and will appear in the April issue of Seattle magazine, but my favorite place to spot them is on the streets so that I can see how real women style them.

The pink Andieanderin tie, inspired by Malala, made an appearance on the red carpet at the 425 magazine Women to Watch event earlier this month. Worn by writer and editor Shelby Moyer, the Malala tie paired perfectly with a black and white knit top and bright yellow trousers. It was the perfect way to celebrate women around the city and give a thoughtful nod to women around the world. Fashion Calendar: Dining Out for Life

Join me as I hit the streets and dine out around town on Thursday, April 26th as part of the Dining Out For Life event which helps raise funds for Lifelong. Over 90 restaurants in the Greater Seattle area will participate by donating 30-50% of their proceeds from the evening to support Lifelong programs which include the Chicken Soup Brigade, health and dental services, youth outreach, and more.

Fashion Calendar: 4 must-attend fashion and beauty events in Seattle

Spring is officially here which means it's time to make room for a new season of style! Join us at these amazing events happening around the city and come experience how Seattle does spring fashion, come rain or shine.

May 12 - Behind the Seams: If you love fashion, you owe it to yourself to check out the "Behind the Seams" series which explores fashion from the MOHAI archives.  The lectures by Clara Berg are fascinating and explore history through a fashion lens. The next event is May 12th and will focus on how World War Two affected women's clothing in the 40's, specifically in Seattle. June 8 - NW Hope & Healing Fashion Show: This annual event helps raise funds for women undergoing treatment for breast cancer in the Seattle area. The fashion show features local boutiques and couture designers, all coming together for a very worthy cause. Tickets and more info can be found here. 

Fashion Calendar: Cookies and Cocktails

The Girl Scouts of Western Washington are gearing up for the Cookies and Cocktails fundraiser which will take place on March 1st at the Seattle Design Center. As a former Girl Scout myself, I have to admit, this is a pretty cool way to raise money for the organization. The theme this year is "Around the Campfire" and will include a larger-than-life campfire made entirely of Girl Scout Cookie boxes, of course. The event will also include music by STAR 101.5 DJ Paul Thompson, an airstream trailer photo opp, cookie-inspired cocktails served up by local bartenders including a special S'mores cocktail featuring Heritage Distilling brown sugar bourbon and DRY Soda, and more. This is a 21 and over event and tickets start at $50. 8 local beauty brands we're loving right now

The Pacific Northwest may be known for its plethora of coffee shops and tech start-ups, but it's also home to a full range of fabulous beauty brands too. We're talking everything from skincare to makeup, nail polish, and more. Here's a round-up of our favorite Seattle-based beauty brands.

Julep
Founded in 2007 by former Starbucks executive Jane Park, Julep has been one of my go-to Seattle beauty brands for a long time. My friend Natasha used to head up their PR and would literally blow my mind with the products they were launching. Dual-ended kajal eyeliner that would last all day and not irritate my eyes? Check. An oxygen nail treatment that would help me to stop biting my nails for good? Yes, please. Julep has it all, from Korean-inspired beauty products to long-last nail lacquers and even free-standing nail parlors sprinkled around the city.

Thrive Causemetics 
Founded by Karissa Bodnar, Thrive Causemetics is a Seattle-based beauty brand that gives back. For every product sold, one is donated to empower a woman thriving through cancer or domestic violence. All products in the line are 100% vegan and cruelty-free. The range includes blush, lipstick, mascara, eyelashes, eyelash adhesive, and makeup brushes.

Paula's Choice
Founded in 1995 by Paula Begoun, Paula's Choice is an online beauty brand based in Seattle. Their product line is non-irritating, fragrance-free and never tested on animals. British Vogue recently called their 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant the "elixir of dreams" because it allows you to exfoliate without actually scrubbing your skin. One of the things that I personally love is that you can shop the site by category, skincare concern, or collection. You can even order your favorite Paula's Choice products in travel size which is perfect for all my jetsetting friends.

Although not a traditional beauty brand, Seattle-based flora & henri did in fact launch fragrances last fall. Isle of May and Alcazar Palace, developed in partnership with local perfumer Chelsey Owen, were a huge hit with shoppers over the holiday season. Available in three sizes, the fragrances make a great gift (for Valentine's Day, perhaps?) and offer a full sensory experience.

Velvet Report
Lindsey Arnold originally launched Velvet Report as a blog to share her love of vegan and cruelty-free beauty products. The site has now expanded to include a full shopping section that features vegan beauty boxes, makeup starter sets, micellar water, and face masks. I also like that she features local brands in her edited assortment whenever possible.

Herbivore Botanicals
Although this local brand is currently experiencing massive growth, the company is just a little more than five years old. Created in a Seattle kitchen by husband and wife team Julia and Alex, Herbivore is founded on the idea that skincare products can and should be safe, non-toxic, and highly effective using organic, food-grade ingredients. The entire line is excellent but my favorite product is the Coco Rose Body Polish which is perfect for getting a super smooth shave on your legs.

Van der Pop
Launched in 2016 by April Pride, Van der Pop offers a full range of beautifully designed products for female marijuana connoisseurs including leather stash bags, violet glass jars, geometric porcelain pipes, and pre-rolled cones. The Van der Pop line also includes several skincare products that feature European-cultivated hemp seeds including serums, creams, body balms, and luxurious body oils.

butter LONDON
It would be a miss not to include butter LONDON in this round-up. Their polishes are fabulous, and yes, they even have one that matches Pantone's Color of the Year. The company also just opened a nail bar in Seattle's trendy South Lake Union neighborhood with means I now have zero excuses for sporting a chipped manicure for extended periods of time.
