This month the windows at Selfridges appear to explode with polka dots courtesy of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama to mark her artistic collaboration with Louis Vuitton.
The 83 year old artist, invited by LV creative director Marc Jacobs to collaborate on a new collection got her start as an avant grade artist in 1959 when she began a series of paintings titled 'Infinity Net'. In 2008 one of her paintings, 'Infinity Net No. 2' sold at auction for $5.8 million.
Kusama is known throughout the art community as one of this century's most influential artists despite her constant battles with mental health including childhood hallucinations and obsessive thoughts about death and dying. In 1977 Kusama voluntarily checked herself in to a psychiatric hospital where she has been living ever since, leaving only to make the daily trip to her art studio.
The Yayoi Kusama x Louis Vuitton collection includes shoes, handbags, apparel and accessories. A few personal faves include the yellow, white and black polka dot pumps, the leather polka dot collar with studs and the infinity dots beach towel. Check out the collection online now.
